Frontend Engineer / Designer

As a UI specialist / frontend engineer, you’ve seen some horrendous interfaces in your time. Payroll systems that mesmerize hapless users with menus nested nine levels deep. Ticketing systems that seemed designed to cause carpal tunnel syndrome after a few weeks of work. And those are just the ones you haven’t willed yourself to forget.

Sure, you’ve heard all the excuses: “business software is complex, and complex things need complex UIs”, or “our users are pros, they’d rather it be complete than easy to use”, or “meh… the guys making the purchase decision aren’t going to be the ones using it anyway”. In your weaker moments, sometimes you even believe them — maybe this is just the way business software has to be.

At PagerDuty, we’re committed to building a feature-rich, sophisticated, and robust IT operations alerting system. Unlike our competitors, though, we are equally committed to ensuring our product’s interface is intuitive, responsive, and beautiful. After all, our users are annoyed enough when we wake them up at 4am to tell them their site is down. The least we can do is give them a IT ops system that makes sense.

Responsibilities

Requirements

You’ve worked on web-based projects where you were responsible for going from a feature list to a production ready UI. You know this is a tall order: few people can both design and implement great UIs.

You’re an expert at Javascript, HTML, and CSS. You’ve worked with enough Javascript toolkits to have strong opinions on the matter.

You’ve been doing this long enough to know that validating a design with actual users is not optional.

You know what good UIs are all about: allowing users to get what they need done quickly and intuitively. You know that all the Flash-iness and window dressing in the world does nothing if it doesn’t further that goal. Form follows function (but that doesn’t stop you from building striking pixel-perfect designs).

You’re confident. You are able to defend your designs and argue for your decisions with sound logic.

You’re willing to relocate to the Bay area. Our offices are located in the SOMA district of San Francisco.

Our environment

We don’t hire based on experience with a handful of tools. Instead, we want smart, capable, and experienced people who are willing to learn the tools as needed.
