Cloud Operations Maturity Assessment, 2021: Key Attributes and Behaviors that Differentiate Beginners from Experts

Leading industry analyst firm IDC conducted research, sponsored by PagerDuty, with 800+ large enterprises worldwide to better understand trends and best practices through the journey to digital maturity. As organizations implement and begin to operate their “cloud” infrastructures with the aim of enabling faster innovation to gain significant competitive advantage, they proceed through four distinct levels of cloud operational maturity: beginner, intermediate, advanced, and expert.

IDC concluded that organizations with expert-level cloud operations tended to transform through:

  • Consolidation on a single platform for real time cloud operations;
  • Adoption of Agile, DevOps, and service ownership cultures; and
  • Establishment of a clear centralized governance framework for cloud operations.

IDC also found that for such transformation to succeed, it must be driven from the top by an executive mandate early in the process to perform the broad, enterprise-wide changes to processes, technology, and training required to transition from beginner adoption to expert mastery of cloud and cloud operations.
