Data center redundancy

One of our fundamental architectural design goals is to be able to survive a complete data center outage without impacting the deliverability of alerts. Failover architectures aren’t effective because they lengthen outages and cause big changes in system performance so we have fully distributed our services across multiple data centers and hosting providers. With our multi-master architecture, even when a data center completely fails we can keep our deliverability guarantee.

Contact method provider redundancy

We offer a breadth of contact methods so you can get alerted via the devices you prefer. We use multiple providers for each contact method and continually conduct end-to-end provider testing to proactively replace providers that are experiencing downtime or running slowly to ensure our customers do not experience an interruption in service.

Highly secure data

All of our traffic between data centers – both within a region and across regions – is encrypted. On every single server we have deployed custom firewalls and we conduct continuous port scanning against our infrastructure. Additionally, we have automatic intrusion detection so we quickly squash any attacks.

  • Physical Security: PagerDuty uses ISO 27001 and FISMA certified data centers. Physical access is strictly controlled both at the perimeter and at building ingress points by professional security staff utilizing video surveillance, state of the art intrusion detection systems, biometric locks and other electronic means. Only authorized personnel have access to the data center.
  • System and Software Security: PagerDuty’s system infrastructure is updated regularly with the latest security patches. All of our servers run hardened, patched operating systems. We employ dedicated firewalls and VPN services to block unauthorized system access. We also employ an internal team of software engineers and DevOps engineers to keep our software and its dependencies up to date eliminating potential security vulnerabilities. This team carefully audits and tests all software components that affect the overall security of the system.
  • Communications: All account-specific data exchanged with PagerDuty is transmitted over SSL. The PagerDuty APIs support both SSL and non-SSL (for legacy systems). Of course, we strongly encourage all API calls be made over SSL.
