Incidents as we Imagine Them Versus How They Actually Are

There is a tendency to imagine (or remember!) incidents as unfolding much neater and orderly than they actually are. Events can lead some engineers scratching their heads about what is happening, while their teammates can instead be confused about how it's happening. Sometimes diagnostic paths can lead down rabbit holes. Sometimes issues can be detected after they've been resolved. This talk is about recent research on these "messy details" of real incidents and it's implications on how we understand them beyond the traditional "metricification" approaches.

Customer Support When Dev Teams are a World Away

Leading daily fantasy sports site FanDuel must stay up at all times so that their customers can play games during live sporting events. With the majority of these games taking place after working hours, peak traffic and usage occur when very few people are in the office. To compound matters, FanDuel’s technical teams are located five time zones away. So how do you troubleshoot and assemble the appropriate resources immediately when there’s a high severity issue, if you’re in Customer Support? In this session, learn how FanDuel addresses these challenges using PagerDuty for SupportOps.

Through A Glass Darkly: Ethics in AI

Technologists shape the world by our decisions, whether explicit or unexamined; our code constructs reality. As the automated systems we devise affect more lives, our responsibility weighs all the heavier. We need to examine what we mean by consent and disclosure, by opting in and data retention, by privacy and security. What does human-computer interaction look like when an artificial intelligence is learning from all it encounters in our flawed, messy, all-too-human world? Ethical questions around corner cases and defaults become critical when the stakes include human lives and freedoms. Let's consider how to build a future where we want to live.

Speaker: Bridget Kromhout, Principal Cloud Developer Advocate at Microsoft

HumanOps: Achieving Peak Performance

IT Operations telemetry has always focused on the health of servers, applications, and technical services...but what really drives the quality of all these things are the people behind them. Companies must understand employee health in order to retain and attract talent that keeps systems running at peak performance. Join us to learn how PagerDuty’s Operations Health Management Service helps organizations gain actionable insights into their most critical asset: their people.

Speaker: Ophir Ronen, Director, Digital Insight, PagerDuty

Measuring Software Quality and Business Value

Tracking and measuring KPIs are a major part of DevOps practices. Yet when you come right to it, what exactly should you be measuring beyond MTTA and MTTR? What are the metrics that your engineering teams should be tracking to analyze code performance and quality? What are the metrics that the business cares about? In this session, we’ll discuss the different metrics that can be tracked to better understand performance and quantifying how development teams are supporting the business.

“Failure” as Success: The Mindset, The Methods, and The Landmines

"Failing fast," "failing forward" and "Learning from failure" are all the rage in the tech industry right now. The tech company "unicorns" seem to talk endlessly about how they reframe failure into success. And yet, many of us are still required to design and implement backup system capabilities, redundancies, and controls into our software and operations processes. And when those fail, we cringe at the conversation with management that will ensue. So is all this talk of reframing "failure" as "success" within our organizations just that: talk? And what does that look like, anyway? We'll explore mindset, the history it's rooted in, as well as effective methods to move your organization toward it and some land mines to avoid along the way.

Speaker: J Paul Reed, Founder, Release Engineering Approaches

This IS NOT Fine: Putting Out (Code) Fires

So the dumpster is on fire. Again. The site’s down. Your boss’s face is an ever-deepening purple. And you begin debating whether you should join the #incident channel or call an ambulance to deal with his impending stroke. Firefighters have clear procedures and a strong hierarchy. The first truck at a scene immediately begins assessing the situation. They evaluate building construction, visible smoke, fire and flow paths. The Incident Commander gives orders to his or her personnel regarding fire attack as well as calling for additional resources, communicating with those not yet at at the scene and preparing an action plan. This talk will focus on how firefighters approach a fire — before, during and after an incident — and how we can apply those strategies to our own (admittedly much less dangerous) fires.

Speaker: Emily Freeman, Head of Developer Relations and Product Marketing, Kickbox

The Real-time Business Impact of Your Operations

Digital service performance is now at the heart of every organization’s ability to not just thrive, but survive. When incidents occur on technical services, business and technical teams need a shared, real-time view into this mission-critical connection between incidents and their broader business impact — on revenue, customers, and more. Learn about PagerDuty approach to providing end-to-end visibility for both digital business leaders and technical responders seeking to truly own the customer experience.

Speakers: Ben Connolly, Head of Digital IT, Vodafone
Jeremy Bourque, Product Manager, PagerDuty

Digital Business meets IoT: More Than Just Software in Real-Time

As software eats the world, the emphasis on uptime to meet customer expectations has been growing. But most companies don’t live entirely in a virtual bubble: devices are often critical to the health of the business. Thanks to the IoT movement, connecting those digital signals to real-time response is simpler than ever. Whether devices are helping you to create new engagement with your customers or streamlining your existing operations, this session will showcase experts from a variety of industries who have brought PagerDuty into unique new areas to drive action.

Monitoring that Monitors the Monitors of the Monitors

One way to break the cycle of alert fatigue is by improving the quality of the signals you monitor. That can mean greater resolution at which monitoring data is ingested and processed, smarter statistical methods for aggregating and correlating data across multiple services, or routing alerts through an escalation and incident management system.
But what if the right signals aren’t emitted by my systems, but instead by the actions of my operations team?
In this talk, I’ll share how we combined application metrics with metadata from our chatops tools to unlock insights about the behavior of our operations team. And how monitoring that behaviour in real-life provided our leaders with more accurate and earlier warnings about incidents happening in real-time.

Speakers: Arijit Mukherji, CTO, SignalFX

Defining and Measuring the Operational Maturity of Your Business

Digital business leaders today must clearly understand the link between operations and business outcomes in order to effectively prioritize investments in people, process, and technology. Typically, tying these contexts together is extremely difficult, let alone understanding the metrics to measure in the first place. However, those who take advantage of prescriptive insights from their operations data can gain a much higher success rate for their digital transformations. In this session, we’ll dive into the characteristics of operationally mature organizations, and provide a framework around the exact metrics and operational readouts to use in order to effectively measure and improve operational health.

Jeff Martens, Group Product Manager, Analytics & Visibility, PagerDuty
