Instana Integration Guide

Instana is an APM solution built for monitoring microservice applications that enables IT Ops to deliver higher quality services by automating monitoring, tracing and root cause analysis. Integration with PagerDuty directs Incidents directly to DevOps and IT support personnel with precise root cause details enabling extremely fast and accurate resolution.

In PagerDuty

1. From the Services menu, select Service Directory.

2. On your Services page:

– If you are creating a new service for your integration, click +New Service.

– If you are adding your integration to an existing service, click the name of the service you want to add the integration to. Then click the Integrations tab and click the Add a new integration to this service link.

3. Select your app from the Integration Type menu and enter an Integration Name.

If you are creating a new service for your integration, in General Settings, enter a Name for your new service. Then, in Incident Settings, specify the Escalation Policy, Notification Urgency, and Incident Behavior for your new service.

Click the Add Service or Add Integration button to save your new integration. You will be redirected to the Integrations page for your service.

4. Copy the Integration Key for your new integration.

In Instana

1. On the left navigation panel, click SettingsTeam SettingsAlert Channels

2. Click Add Alert Channel and select PagerDuty.

3. Enter a Name for your PagerDuty alert channel and paste the Integration Key (generated in step 4 of In PagerDuty, above) into the Service Integration Key field. Click Create.

4. At this point, you need to configure when you want Instana to trigger an incident in PagerDuty. On the left navigation panel, click Settings Alerts → New Alert

5. Enter a descriptive Name for the alert, select which Events to be notified for, and add the PagerDuty Alert Channel that you created in step 4. 

6. Congratulations, configuration is now complete! To test your integration, you’ll need to have an issue within Instana, which will trigger an incident in PagerDuty.

FAQ

Will the PagerDuty incident resolve when the Instana issue resolves?

Yes, the PagerDuty incident will automatically resolve as soon as the issue is resolved within Instana.
